In Parts: 1998-2001 - A Project by Richard Tuttle

ICA is pleased to present an important project by Richard Tuttle, an American artist, who has played a significant role in contemporary art since he emerged in the context of Post-minimalism during the late 1960s. "In Parts: 1998-2001, A Project by Richard Tuttle" is an exhibition that draws on 13 discrete bodies of work, dating from 1998 to the present. As conceived by Tuttle, the project will be a site-specific installation about the "spaces in between," as he calls the increments of time and space established by his most recent works. These increments can be seen to roughly correspond to the time he spends each year divided between living and working in New York and New Mexico, and to the works themselves, which are created in groups, then installed with specific increments of space in between.

The point of departure for the entire installation is a group of four works on loan from Herbert and Dorothy Vogel (New York). These works are emblematic of a unique collection and relationship that spans the artist's entire career and which has afforded him for decades a chance to consider (and tinker with) "the space in between." The Vogel connection extends to ICA's own history: in 1970 ICA organized and toured Painting, Drawing and Sculpture of the 60's and the 70's from the Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection. Other works exhibited in "Richard Tuttle: Multi-Part" will include unique painted constructions, such as Painted Boxes and Two with any To; and 40 Zug Squares (from Switzerland), which will be presented in America for the first time. The exhibition will be accompanied by an 80-page artist's book publication, created by Tuttle with the graphic design team of Connie and Neil Purtill. Texts will include a new poem commissioned from Charles Berstein and an interview with the Vogels by ICA's Senior Curator, Ingrid Schaffner.
