Heimo Zobernig
Galerie Nagel Draxler at Lempertz, Brussels
09.02.2018 - 09.03.2018
Opening: Thursday, 08.02.2018 18:00

Galerie Nagel Draxler presents a spectacular solo show by Heimo Zobernig in the beautiful art nouveau hall of Kunsthaus Lempertz in Brussels. Zobernig’s new 200 x 200 cm grid paintings vaguely refer to Piet Mondrian's "New York City 1" painting from 1942. While Mondrian's work was based on a two-dimensional city map of New York, Zobernig's paintings open up spatial perspectives. Grids, predefined with the aid of tape, are crossing layers of color applied with an expressive gesture, creating the visual effect of a multi-layered depth. The techno colors partially used by Zobernig are iridescent and oscillating. The strong appeal of these images emerges from the clash of formal rigor and abstract improvisation.

Heimo Zobernig (* 1958, Mauthen, Carinthia) is considered as one of the most important and influential contemporary European artists. For more than three decades he developed an exciting oeuvre dealing with the artistic traditions of modernity. Zobernig's paintings, sculptures and installations have been presented in numerous international exhibitions, including documenta X and documenta XI, Venice Biennal 2001, MUMOK Vienna, Kunsthalle Basel, K21 Dusseldorf, Tate St Ives, Museo Del Arte Reina Sofia Madrid, Kunsthaus Graz, Museum Ludwig Cologne, to name just a few. In 2015, Heimo Zobernig represented Austria at the Venice Biennal.
