An exhibition that celebrates the acquisition last year by the Museum of Goya’s drawing The Butterfly Bull
The Butterfly Bull, executed by Francisco de Goya in the last years of his life in Bordeaux (1824-1828), can be seen as a synthesis of various thematic and formal aspects to be found in his work from the time when he was working on the elaboration of the Caprichos (1794-1799).
Goya’s work on paper merits particular mention within his oeuvre as a whole: free from the constraints of commissions, in his works on paper the artist was able to express his unique vision of the world with particular freedom. The drawings in his albums and his series of prints together constitute a personal universe which encompasses his particular interests, from intimate, daily life experiences to the major events and issues of his day, together constituting his most direct, critical and acerbic creations.
