Extra Art: A Survey of Artists Ephemera 1960-1999

Extra Art: A Survey of Artists' Ephemera 1960–1999, presented by the CCAC Institute and organized by guest curator Steven Leiber, focuses on rarely examined printed ephemera produced by artists since 1960. The exhibition presented approximately 500 works that span a range of art movements, including conceptual art, Fluxus, pop art, minimalism, visual poetry and arte povera and features the work of approximately 100 artists, including Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Joseph Beuys, Bruce Conner, Jan Dibbets, Barbara Kruger, Sharon Lockhart, Yoko Ono, Raymond Pettibon, Allen Ruppersberg, Edward Ruscha, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner and Hannah Wilke.

Artists' Ephemera encompasses a breadth of formats, such as mailed art, invitations, posters, buttons, advertisements, manifestos, primary documents, performance relics and postcards. While recognized as a viable form of art making, artists' ephemera works surprisingly have received little critical attention and have gone virtually unnoticed by galleries and museums. By their very nature, these types of works are intended to be distributed for free or at a very low cost, a characteristic that has kept them outside the realm of art deemed collectible. Historically, artists' ephemera work has not been considered as a genre in its own right. When these works have been included in artist retrospectives or themed shows, they typically have been relegated to a fringe position, such as a reading room exhibit. Over the past 10 years, various institutions have mounted exhibitions to examine a particular art movement in which artists' ephemera works played a significant role, but Extra Art will be the first comprehensive exhibition to focus on these works as a genre and thoroughly explore the important role this style of art making has played throughout contemporary art history.
