ENRICO DAVID

Michael Werner Gallery, London is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Enrico David.

David's work encompasses painting, sculpture, textiles and installation with the act of drawing being key to his exploration of form. Mining a space between figuration and abstraction, the artist consistently returns to the body as a point of departure, exploring the human figure as a metaphor for transformation. The sense of metamorphosis that pervades these forms through allusions to cocoons and germination lends these new works a close affinity with the natural world. This suggestion of continual change is further emphasised by David's manipulation of materials, the final works often being the result of a sequence of modelling and casting processes that divert our understanding of their material truth.

This exhibition is David's second with Michael Werner in London. Major solo showings during the past decade include Fault Work, Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah, UAE (2016); Autoparent, Lismore Castle, Scotland (2016); The Hepworth Wakefield (2015); Maramotti Collection, Reggio Emilia (2015); UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2013); Head Gas, New Museum, New York (2011); Repertorio Ornamentale, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice (2011); How Do You Love Dzzzzt by Mammy?, Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel (2009); Bulbous Marauder, Seattle Art Museum (2008); and Ultra Paste, ICA London (2007). In 2013 David presented a major installation of paintings, tapestries and sculptures as part of The Encyclopedic Palace, curated by Massimiliano Gioni for the Venice Biennale. David was born in Ancona, Italy and currently lives and works in London.

Enrico David opens 22 September at Michael Werner Gallery in London and remains on view through 25 November. The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-colour catalogue featuring an essay by Jonathan Miles.
