press release

Parallel Worlds presents the latest works by Eija-Liisa Ahtila (1959–). Since the early 1990s, Ahtila has pioneered new creative idioms in the art of the moving image. She is one of our internationally most acclaimed artists. In her multi-channel video works, Ahtila uses pictures, sounds and stories to create installations in which perspectives change and the viewers are able to participate in the construction of a cinematic experience.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is Where Is Where?, which was donated to the museum by the Kiasma Foundation in 2008. In addition to globalisation, Ahtila’s most recent works explore the relations between humans, animals and the natural world as seen through the perspectives of bio-politics and post-humanism, as in the video installations The Annunciation (2010) and Horizontal (2011). Eija-Liisa Ahtila has exhibited widely in major international museums, including the Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York and Moderna Museet in Stockholm. The last time Ahtila’s work was presented in Finland on this scale was ten years ago in Kiasma.

The exhibition is produced by Moderna Museet, Stockholm, in cooperation with Kiasma. The exhibition was previously on show at the museum of contemporary art – Carré d’Art – in Nîmes, France.
