Drawings and Prints: Selections from the Permanent Collection

This exhibition will feature a diverse selection of European and American works on paper spanning the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. A group of early Italian engravings will be shown, including two masterpieces attributed to the great Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506): Bacchanal with Silenus (ca. 1475) and Risen Christ between Saints Andrew and Longinus (ca. 1472). A section is also devoted to Italian painters from the seventeenth century who experimented with the medium of etching in new and exciting ways. Highlights include Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione’s (1609-1664) atmospheric portrayal of the ancient philosopher Diogenes on his quest for an honest man (Diogenes with the Lantern, ca. 1645-1647) and Jason and the Dragon (ca. 1664), one of the last and most dramatic etchings by Salvator Rosa (1615-1673).

Highlights from the nineteenth century include a new acquisition by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867), Virgil Reading the Aeneid to Augustus, Livia, and Octavia. The drawing will be exhibited alongside other examples of Neoclassical drawings depicting scenes from classical antiquity, including another recent acquisition, Christoffer Wilhem Eckersberg’s (1783-1853) The Surviving Horatian. In addition, a selection of drawings and prints by the eccentric French artist Rodolphe Bresdin will be on view, as well as an amusing array of prints, illustrated books, and ephemera on the theme of hair.

The installation will include a selection of modern and contemporary portrait prints by artists such as Henri Matisse, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, and Elizabeth Peyton. A portfolio of twelve lithographs entitled That is Right by Ed Ruscha (American, b. 1937) and a colorful set of five abstract etchings by Thomas Nozkowski (American, b. 1944) will also be on view in the gallery.
