Down the Garden Path

Finding its origin in the work of three key figures, Roberto Burle Marx (Brazil), Isamu Noguchi (Japan/US), and Ian Hamilton Finlay (Scotland), Down the Garden Path: Artists' Gardens Since 1960 assembles the work of approximately 25 well-known and lesser-known artists from around the world who take a critical approach to the design and realization of gardens. The exhibition traces the history of contemporary artists’ gardens while showing how topics such as war, socialist utopias, land reclamation, and traditional philosophy in contemporary society are addressed. Divided into three sections, Down the Garden Path will illustrate Noguchi’s influence on such artists as Gordon Matta-Clark, Robert Smithson and Vito Acconci; Burle-Marx’s ideals as seen in the work of Helio Oiticica, Serio Vega, and Ingrid Pollard; and Hamilton Finlay obsession with war, presented with work by Stan Douglas, Jenny Holzer and Ronald Jones. Additionally, an open competition will yield five artists who will install new work in open spaces adjacent to the museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park and the nearby Queens Botanical Garden.
