The starting point for the project called Delusive Orders is the context in which the two institutions that have undertaken it function and perform: namely, Muzeum Sztuki [Museum of Art] in Lódz and Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladgach. In the case of the museum from Lódz this context is its tradition of the constructivist avant-garde and its postwar continuations, while in the case of the Mönchengladgach museum – minimalism and conceptualism of the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition which opened on December 13th at Muzeum Sztuki [Museum of Art] in Lódz is the first part of the project. The second one will take place at the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach on March 2nd, 2008. Included in the project are also events at Instytut Awangardy [The Avant-Garde Institute] in Warsaw – a quasi-museum institution, founded in the context of Edward Krasinski’s study, complete with a unique installation by the artist.

Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz invites to the lecture by Maria Gilissen – a life partner of many years of Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976), who is one of the most important conceptual artists of the 20th century –and to the first in Poland presentation of his film output.

As the poet, who became an artist, Broodthaers placed language and representation issues in the center of his interest. His art manifests conviction that despite of our habits and hopes, a sign (a word, an image) does not refer to anything else beside itself, it does not present any hidden meanings. Only juxtaposition of objects, images and words may produce a meaning. In this context, he was undertaking inter alia institutional and exhibition critique or analysis of instrumentalization and politicization process generated by culture. He used various means of expression: poetry, painting, installation, photography and film. Subject of this meeting will be the film creation of Marcel Broodthaers, never before presented to the Polish audience.

According to Broodthaers – an artist who remained to be a poet – cinema resembles a kind of writing. He describes this analogy in this way: “I am cruelly torn between something immobile that has already been written and the comic movement that animates 24 images per second.” At the origin of his film creation there was this idea that cinema can dispense with its basic features – the notion of movement and narration. Classical cinema with its unity of word and image was always very suspicious for him. What kind of the cinema Marcel Broodthaers proposes we will see at the show, which will present 12 of his films – all of them realized in the 35 mm technique.
