press release

This exhibition features previously unpublished work by Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943): the studies she made for her famous masterpiece Leven? of Theater? Her pictorial autobiography contains no less than 769 gouaches; however, in addition to these she produced numerous watercolours, and sketches on separate sheets and the backs of other works which are not part of the series. Perhaps she left them unnumbered or covered the mouths, eyes and texts of certain figures because she considered them unsuitable for Leven? of Theater?

This exhibition reveals how striking these studies are too. They shed new light on Charlotte Salomon’s method and her developing style, especially her experiments with text and colour. Above all, they provide an intimate view of her humour and her sensitive character.
