London-based artist Jeremy Deller's collaborations with diverse British social and cultural groups intriguingly connect fine art with popular culture, and the past with the present. This fall Deller's Capp Street Project residency culminates with the publication of After the Gold Rush, a playful yet serious guidebook to California. The artist combines maps, essays, first-person stories, and visual art to present a practical guide that also serves as an interactive social history and treasure-hunt map. Topics addressed include the gold rush and ghost towns, the dot-com phenomenon, the Black Panther movement in Oakland, Ronald Reagan, Thomas Kinkade, juvenile delinquency in small towns, SUVs, the desert as a place of retreat and exile, old age, and organized religion.
