Candice Breitz: Be My Somebody

L’exposition Candice Breitz: Be My Somebody présente une série de portraits de groupe qui ont pour sujet des communautés de fans. Elle explore l’impact que peuvent avoir les musiques populaires sur la conscience collective contemporaine, et plus particulièrement leur manière de se transformer en « bandes originales » des vies de chacun. Les photographies Monuments sont des portraits grand format de fans que l’artiste a réunis à Berlin pour célébrer leur idole – de Iron Maiden à Abba, en passant par Britney Spears, Marilyn Manson et les Grateful Dead. Pour l’installation vidéo King (A Portrait of Michael Jackson), Candice Breitz a invité quelques fans du Roi de la Pop à réinterpréter et revivre tout un album de ses chansons, dans des conditions d’enregistrement professionnelles. Candice Breitz a également initié le colloque Call + Response qui se tiendra au Mudam du 25 au 28 avril 2008.

The exhibition Candice Breitz: Be My Somebody focuses on a series of collective portraits of fan communities, exploring the impact of popular music on contemporary consciousness, and taking seriously the manner in which music can come to soundtrack individual lives. The Monuments photographs are large-scale portraits of families of fans gathered together by Breitz in Berlin to celebrate their idols, from Iron Maiden and Abba, to Britney Spears, Marilyn Manson and The Grateful Dead. For the multi-channel video installation King (A Portrait of Michael Jackson), Candice Breitz invited fans of the King of Pop to re-perform and re-live an entire album of his songs under professional recording conditions. Candice Breitz also initiated the symposium Call + Response, presented at Mudam from 25 to 28 April 2008.
