press release

Daniel Reich Gallery is pleased to present the works of Camilla Low, Mamiko Otsubo, and Stefan Thater at Hotel Chelsea, curated by Marina Leuenberger and Daniel Schmidt.

Camilla Low’s sculptures merge a cool, high-gloss surface with the formal and spatial relationships made familiar through Russian Construcitivism. Her sculptures act as Minimalist characters in a Constructivist play whose stage has now been expanded to include the entirety of the exhibition space. The craftsmanship of her fabrication evokes the tradition of Scandinavian aesthetics but the industrial coolness of her materials serve as a counterpoint to its historical and cultural references.

The small cut out circle missing on the invitation card not only refers to Camilla Low’s usage of geometric elements, but also turns out to be Mamiko Otsubo’s large moon leaning on a curved wall outside the exhibition space. The moon cut out of thick MDF board and painted in phosphorescent paint, suggests dimensionality through the expectation of its nightlife. The other sculpture by Otsubo, at first appears to be metal skewers with two branches and a plastic ball, but upon closer inspection reveals a purple sun shining in the middle of a winter forest. While Otsubo¹s work flirts with the pictorial, its material and color choices deny the viewer a complete illusion.

On a narrow shelf, leaned onto the wall is a series of black and white works by Stefan Thater. Each book-like piece made of masonite boards taped together, contain pictures that are painted, abraded and printed with the use of various found objects. Within Thater’s work, these objects of the everyday find new life as tools leaving their imprint onto images.
