Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla

Opening May 27 at MCASD La Jolla is Threshold: Byron Kim 1990 – 2004. This is the first solo museum exhibition of Kim’s work, and offers an overview of the artist’s career, focusing on his significant body of easel paintings, presenting four major bodies of paintings produced since 1989. For the past decade, he has maintained a steadfast commitment to exploring the potential content of abstract painting, drawing on post-war traditions of monochrome painting exemplified by Ad Reinhardt’s black paintings and Brice Marden’s waxy fields of color, as well as by Mark Rothko and other New York School painters of the abstract sublime. Also on view at MCASD La Jolla through the summer are Location, Location, Location; and In the Café: Barry Bell.

Threshold: Byron Kim 1990—2004 was conceived by independent curator Eugenie Tsai and organized by Constance Lewallen, Senior Curator for Exhibitions at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. The exhibition has been supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Peter Norton Family Foundation. Support for the Berkeley presentation has also been provided by RBC Dain Rauscher and Consortium for the Arts at UC Berkeley.
