press release

We are very proud to present Brad Kahlhamer´s first solo show at Andréhn-Schiptjenko.

Brad Kahlhamer lives and works in New York. His work has recently been seen in solo shows like “Let´s Walk West” at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Arizona, “Almost American” at Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Wisconsin, and Aspen Art Museum, Colorado and in group shows at Deste Foundation, Athens, Greece, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York and San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art, to name a few.

What happens to the Hollywood version of the westward journey-with its promise of liberation, big skies and brave adventures-if it gets caught on haunted ground ? In his paintings, drawings, photos and lyrics, Brad Kahlhamer tells such wayward stories intertwined with his own, personal story. Born in Tucson, Arizona of Native American background and adopted by birth by a couple of German descent, Brad Kahlhamer´s art tells stories about hybrid identity. Although New York culture seems to colour the pitch of his works, it is the West that governs the imagery of his art.

At Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Brad Kahlhamer will show new works on paper, photos, sketches and colour Xeroxes. The installation will resemble an American road-trip through comic and traditional Native American icons and figures.
