press release

The work of the iconic and internationally renowned artist Barbara Kruger will be next to feature on Melbourne's landmark Republic Tower building, and the first to be curated by ACCA's Artistic Director Juliana Engberg as part of a new relationship between the Visible Art Foundation and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Kruger's work is the first installation to be organised by Juliana Engberg as part of this new partnership that will bring ACCA's program, and yet more cutting-edge art, to Melbourne's great outdoors.

”Barbara Kruger is renowned for her use of the direct address in her work, and she will be the first international artist to grace the Republic Tower. This is an ideal time to show her work - and in such a dramatic location. Her incisive political commentary cuts to the heart of the matter and in this installation she addresses the current geopolitical situation, power and its abuses as perpetrated by imperial administrations. Her work confronts our tendency to turn a blind eye, feel brain drained and shattered by events. However, as always, she leaves open ended who are the responsible parties, who are the villains and who are the victims,” says Engberg .

Kruger, whose highly recognisable visual language has helped shape a generation of artists, explores the dynamics of power, identity and sexuality in her work, whilst also challenging the spectacle of stereotype and cliché in this installation she uses images as a form of semiotic poetry.
