Atsuko Tanaka
14 September, 2019 – 16 February, 2020
Curator: Matilda Olof-Ors and Jo Widoff

Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005) joined the Osaka-based radical art group Gutai in 1955. For a performance in 1956, she created “Denkifuku” (Electric Dress) – a costume consisting of hundreds of coloured light bulbs – which became one of her signature pieces. When Tanaka wore the dress on stage, it illuminated the room with pulsating light, like electrified blood rushing through her body. Body and technology were united in the hallucinatory light-play of the modern city.

This autumn, Atsuko Tanaka’s works are presented in an exhibition that explores her practice in depth, along with the playfulness of the Gutai group’s experimental and transcendental art.

The exhibition is shown in the left-hand gallery on Floor 2.
