ARCO PRESENTS ITS SELECTION OF GALLERIES FOR ITS 27th EVENT

Madrid, 27th September.- A total of 257 galleries from 34 countries have been selected for the 27th International Contemporary Art Fair, ARCO’08, to be held from 13th through 18th February 2008 at the Feria Madrid exhibition centre. A list of 224 galleries were confirmed after the second meeting of the Organising Committee for the General Programme and Arco 40.Besides, the fair’s Curated Programmes, chosen by international curators, feature 50 galleries, 27 of which are also taking part in the General Programme and Arco 40. Out of the total galleries at ARCO’08, 70 are from Spain and the remaining 187 from abroad.

General Programme + Arco 40 For the upcoming fair, the Organising Committee studied applications from 543 candidates applying for the General Programme and Arco 40, 20% more than entries received last year (438).

The final result of the selection process was 224 galleries (21 more than in 2007), 68 from Spain and 156 from another 23 countries, signalling the effort this year to broaden its scope, including a higher number of galleries on the basis of the quality of their exhibition proposals.

We would also underscore the high number of new incorporations selected this year: 86 (8 Spanish, 78 international), to be added to the galleries taking part for the first time at ARCO last year. Of these 41 galleries (4 Spanish, 37 international) are taking part for the first time ever at the International Contemporary Art Fair. This points to a positive tendency for the fair and further confirms the growing international interest in ARCO and the Spanish market, as well as the spirit of renewal palpable at the fair. This year ARCO has top shelf new incorporations together with return galleries who add substantial weight to the fair.

New incorporations include a strong contingent from the world’s two leading art centres: New York (USA) and London (UK), as well as others from Germany, Brazil (especially well represented, as it is ARCO’s guest country in 2008), Italy, Holland, and others.

Curated Programmes This second meeting of the Organising Committee also ratified the selection submitted by the team of international curators collaborating this year in the design of the Curated Programmes. 50 galleries were selected, 33 of which are taking part exclusively in those programmes, with the other 17 also participating at the General Programme and Arco 40.

This year, the curated programme consists of the following sections: Solo Projects, a core programme of projects featuring one single artist; Expanded Box, focussing on happening new trends, exploring the influence of technology in art; plus a new section called Performing ARCO for galleries wishing to present live works by visual artists.

Selection Criteria The criteria followed by the International Contemporary Art Fair is based on five points: the quality of galleries themselves, but also of their exhibition project and artists; their exhibition programme throughout the year, and the interest of gallery artists; the positioning of the galleries within the international art market; their administrative and financial solvency; and, finally, their profile at international art fairs, ARCO included.

A factor that has been to the fore in recent years, and is being confirmed again this year, is the growing demand from the art market. This has an obvious knock-on impact on the selection, raising the standards of requirements of the fair. ARCO is now in a new scenario dominated by competitiveness, and this is bound to question the reach of galleries within the contemporary art scene, as well as ARCO’s efforts to move the Spanish art market toward the top of the world ranking. This year ARCO is moving to the recently built Halls 12, 14 and 14.1, so it will also be debuting a new layout and design.
