press release

Passing By, a sound project by Ann Lislegaard, inaugurated The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum’s dedicated sound gallery when the Museum reopened to the public after a major renovation and expansion on June 13 and ran through September 1, 2004. One of seven inaugural artist projects and exhibitions, Passing By was installed in a space specially constructed to accommodate the demands of sound art today.

Conceived as a way to document the physical and emotional transition from old to new, Passing By was a sonic map of the Museum’s transformation. Visiting The Aldrich over the course of the almost fourteen-month-long construction period, Lislegaard made several field recordings to capture the perturbations caused by the construction on the Museum’s site.

I imagine breaking the chronology of the recordings, emphasizing the transitional states in the material contrary to a linear structuring with a beginning and an end. In this way the installation for The Aldrich Museum will be a soundscape of transformation, of stretched, looped and folded time, of abstract sounds and structures evoking mental and emotional images. —Ann Lislegaard
