press release

In his first solo exhibition at Galerie Akinci, Andrei Roiter displays new works of art, including paintings, drawings and objects. Roiter frequently presents his work as an installation, i.e. a collection of various types of work that are brought together under a specific theme to form a greater whole. In No People, Roiter brings together works in which the human dimension is presented in masked or abstract form, or is missing entirely.

The nomadic lifestyle of Andrei Roiter (born in Moscow in 1960) is reflected in his work and the concepts that he links to his exhibitions. His journey abroad started in 1990; since then, he has shuttled between his studios in New York and Amsterdam and the various places where he exhibits his work. While he is travelling, Roiter collects images and objects that appeal to him.Rather than being eagerly sought motifs, these are frequently everyday objects; things that he comes across by chance. He amasses these impressions as souvenirs and memories, saves them in his archive and (sometimes years later) retrieves them again for use in his own work.He is an archaeologist, digging up objects from everyday life, sublimating them in his work and adorning them with fresh commentary and a certain humour.

Andrei Roiter has studied at the Institute of Architecture in Moscow (1978-1980).

His work is worldwide exhibited in galleries and museums; among others Kunsthalle Basel, Forum Kunst , Rottweil, Van Esch Galerie, Eindhoven, Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco, Elizabeth Koury Gallery, New York, Anders Tornberg Galleri, Lund, Wesleyan University, Connecticut, Blum & Poe Gallery, Los Angeles, Galerie Anhava, Helsinki and Kunsthalle Recklinghausen in Germany.

Three publications of Andrei Roiter are available in the gallery: ’Kaleidoscope’, Salon Verlag 2001, ‘Inscapes’, Kunsthalle Recklinghausen 2004 and ‘Shacks and flags’, Galerie Anhava 2005.
