Signal proudly presents the first solo exhibition in Sweden by the British artist Adam Chodzko (b. 1965). Since 1991 Chodzko has exhibited extensively in international exhibitions like the Venice Biennale; PS1, NY and Tate Britain. Using a wide variety of media Chodzko’s work operates in the tight spaces he evolves between documentary and fantasy taking the form of i.e. a late night parade of nocturnal animals to the Frieze Art Fair or a god look-alike contest.

Three new pieces have been produced specifically for the exhibition at Signal using the city of Malmö as source of inspiration. One uses one tonne of mud moraine from the excavation of the Citytunnel, one million wormwood seeds and 50 litres of rain water collected from the roof of Rooseum - Center for Contemporary Art ; another, a performance involving a car breaking down at the exact mid-point of the Øresund Bridge between Malmö and Copenhagen; a third is a conversation with an opening door. These, together with the film piece Yet (2006), constitute the ingredients of the exhibition.

All works depart from a kind of archaeological search where a retrieval/recycling of waste, excess, historical and scientific facts, tall stories, myths and conspiracy theories compose new narratives that operate between fact and fiction. The different parts in the exhibition at Signal form the ingredients for a spell with the potential to protect and heal the city. An important aspect of Adam Chodzko’s work is the inclusion of chance, coincidence and what presents itself during the working process in terms of information, encounters and found material involving misunderstandings, misreadings and collapses inadvertently appearing to provide the edges of parallel possibilities.
