press release

October 2004 will see the second Frieze Art Fair. With 150 galleries from around the world, the fair will be the focal point of the Autumn for anyone interested in contemporary art.

Projects and Events Polly Staple, Frieze Art Fair Curator, who was responsible for the inaugural programme in 2003, has curated the 2004 programme. Staple will build upon the curatorial successes of 2003, producing a series of distinctive events for the unique context of Frieze Art Fair 2004.

The Projects, Talks and Schools’ Education Day is commissioned by Frieze Foundation with the support of the Arts Council of England, London Development Agency and the Culture 2000 programme of the European Union, in association with Portikus, Frankfurt and the Nicola Trussardi Foundation, Milan.

Commissions The Frieze Art Fair represents a new type of international contemporary art event, one that, before its inauguration in 2003, was unprecedented in the UK. The fair provides new and rich territory to explore the relationship between systems of cultural exchange, art and economy.

Artists participating in the commissions programme have been invited to consider the art fair as a site of production and to use it as raw material for their work. Many have responded by proposing the inclusion of alternative ways of thinking through, or of organizing, behaviour.

In this context some seek to include alternative communities and propose potentially disruptive rules of engagement. Others make inquiries into the role of art within entertainment culture. Still others divert their attention from the market-driven consumption of objects, and look instead at the relationships that bind people and shape social interaction.

Talks Programme The programme consists of 6 panel discussions. Each session lasts approximately 1 1/2 hours and consists of speaker presentations followed by questions from the chair and audience.
