Since 2007 the art space zwanzigquadratmeter, or zqm, as it is more commonly named, provides residencies for emerging artists in Berlin by using the space as a creative experiment for exhibitions and in-situ projects.
Founded by the Swiss artist/curator Eric Emery, zqm has already hosted more than 70 exhibitions, including collaborations with the UdK - the Berlin University of the Arts, Germany - and ECAL - University of Art and Design of Lausanne, Switzerland. Eric Emery's curatorial practice includes young creatives as well as established artists, such as the Norwegian artist Knut Henrik Henriksen or the Swiss artists Guillaume Pilet, Athene Galiciadis, Vanessa Safavi or Claudia Comte.
Located on Peterburger Strasse, in the heart of Friedrichshain, zqm belongs to the very first wave of project spaces opening in the formal East-Berlin. Operating as an ongoing vanguard and independent platform supporting the young contemporary art scene, the venue allows a unique dynamic of exchange between artists, curators, and the public.
zqm breaks the boundaries between Germany and Switzerland's art scene: as a native Swiss living in Berlin, Eric Emery manages to build bridges between those two art centres. Working as a non-commercial and non-profit platform, the venue started to function as a small sized institution, making connections with art professionals, universities and students from different backgrounds. Considered a genuinely independent centre for cultural interaction, zqm finds its true relevance by fostering artistic bonds in Europe and creating new platforms of exchange.
