short biography

William Eggleston (born 1939 in Memphis/Tennessee) studied at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Delta State College in Cleveland and University of Mississippi in Oxford/MS. During the early 1960s he worked in black and white photography, and then began to use the striking, saturated colors of the dye-transfer print process. In spite of his controversial solo show, that took place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1976, where the critics deemed it the most hated exhibition of the year, Eggleston became the main catalyst for the 20th-century photographic aesthetics with his landmark color images of everyday life in the American South.
