Robert Motherwell (b. 1915, Aberdeen / Washinton, d. 1991, Provincetown / MA USA) studied at Stanford University; at Harvard University; and at Columbia University. After a 1941 voyage to Mexico with the Surrealist painter Matta, he decided to make painting his primary vocation. He was a teacher at Black Mountain College and founded the art school "Subjects of the Artists" with William Baziotes, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. 1959 and 1964 he participated at documenta 2 und 3 in Kassel.
