On Kawara (1933 born in Kariya-Aichi-ken / Japan, 2014 died in New York) was a conceptual artist, who lived in New York. His work examines chronological time and its function as a measure of human existence. in 1970 he finished the book 'ONE MILLION YEARS - PAST', and 1987 'ONE MILLION YEARS - FUTURE' outgoing from 1969. On Kawara said about this work: "I wanted to tap the numbers of a million years and summarize it in a book! If I can hold on a sheet of paper for 500 years, then I need 2000 sheets for this work, and the history of mankind is only found on the last ten pages!" 1976 he participated at Venice Biennale, 1977 at documenta 6, 1982 at documenta 7, and 2002 at documenta 11 in Kassel.
