Meredith Monk (b. 1942, New York City) is a composer, singer, performer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, music-theater works, films and installations. She is the pioneer of extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance. Her exploration of the voice as an instrument creates new modes of perception and expanded soundscapes. In 1975 she participated in the Venice Biennale. In 2020 she recieved the John Cage Award.
