Florence Knoll ( Florence Knoll Bassett, Florence Schust, born Michigan, USA, 1917) is a furniture designer and architect and a pioneer in the production of modern furniture. Knoll studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. With recommendations from Eliel Saarinen and Alvar Aalto, she went on to study under Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer in Cambridge and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology. She met Hans Knoll in New York, who was establishing his furniture company. Together they created Knoll International and developed a standard for the modern corporate interiors of post-war America.
