Willi Baumeister

This exhibition brings together nearly 50 paintings and 25 drawings by Willi Baumeister (1889-1955), one of the foremost figures of the German avant-garde. The works on display, most of which belong to the artist's legacy held at the Archiv Baumeister at Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, date from 1910 to 1950 and offer a comprehensive overview of the artist's oeuvre.

The show will travel to the Kunstmuseum Winterthur (Switerzerland) (January 28 - April 22, 2012) and the MART (Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto) between June 23 and September 23, 2012.

As an artist, Willi Baumeister showed a great deal of courage and strength in protecting the ideals and aspirations of Modernity in the face of the Second World War and the political oppression brought on by National Socialism. In the years following the war, he was able to set the foundations for the future development of the visual arts. In line with Modernity, Willi Baumeister embraced all forms of art. Extending beyond the fields of painting, drawing and graphic art, his mastery is felt in the decorative arts and in typography and stage design in particular. Willi Baumeister was more than just a German artist: his professional ties, friendships and influence transcended borders and reached, among other countries, Spain, Switzerland and Italy.
