Tim Roda: Family Matters

Tim Rodas schwarz-weiße Familienportraits spiegeln seine eigenen Kindheitserinnerungen und Familientraditionen. Sie sind wie Erinnerungen, Bruchstücke von Erzählungen: Sie zeigen Personen in detailreich inszenierten Kulissen, aber die Bedeutungen der Szenen bleiben vage, flüchtig, unheimlich. Roda verwendet vertraute symbolische Requisiten ebenso wie vertraut erscheinende familiäre Schauplätze und lockt die Betrachter mit Bekanntem. Man glaubt sich auszukennen und gerät dabei in eine Falle. Die Bedeutung des Vertrauten wird mehrschichtig bis abgründig. Diese Ambivalenz aus Vertrautheit und Fremdheit ist charakteristisch für Rodas Fotografien. Ihre technische Ausführung ist zudem bewusst nachlässig. Betont unachtsam schneidet Roda die Fotopapierkanten grob ab, lässt chemische Spritzer und andere technische Unsauberkeiten zu. Die Fotografien wirken unperfekt und keinesfalls kostbar. Diese Entwertung korrespondiert mit den Bildinhalten. Zugleich aber geben die Herstellungs- und Gebrauchspuren den fotografischen Reproduktionen einen handwerklichen Charakter, der im Gegensatz zu den gewohnten, glatten und perfekten Fotooberflächen steht.

We are happy to be able to announce a solo show titled „Family Matters“ with photographs by Tim Roda.

Tim Rodas black and white family photographs are filled with reverberations of his own memories of childhood and family traditions. Like memories the images are fragmented narrative: they show his wife and son in detailed settings but the sense of these scenes stay vague, elusive and eerie. Roda uses multiple, symbolic props and accustomed settings and allures the viewer with the familiar. You think you know and then you are trapped. The meaning gets multilayered to abysmal. This ambivalence of familiarity and strangeness is characteristic for Rodas photography. His technical process is appropriately slapdash and abrasive. He roughly cuts the borders of his photographs so that they look torn and abused and he allows or even creates chemical splashes and other technical flaws. This treatment of the pictures adds to the atmosphere of imperfectness, not at all valuable and hand crafted and is in contrast to usual clean cut photography. The invalidation corresponds with the content. Rodas work is beautiful and alarming.
