Katalin Ladik’s Creative Transitions - surviving documenta 14
There are shifts and drifts inside the internal narrative of the each visual poetry object. An unexpected medial transformation act was mapping her poetic sound pattern to an embroidery object: Katalin Ladik „wave” the sound patterns into an embroidery art work using a palm size half-embroidered handkerchief. Finishing the embroidery work she tried something completely unusual: she inverted the embroidery object from the “right side” to the “wrong side”, from the “front” to the “reverse side”, exploring the mystery of the back side threads. How are the patterns formed? „The beauty appears on the surface, but the joy of creation takes place on the reverse, on the underside. The energy that is freed from the restrictions unfolds and prevails. It does not follow the rules, it transforms into joy and pain. You cannot see this from the front, only from the „wrong” side of the art work „– says she. This is the most intriguing part of the experiment. The closing sequence are two recordings inspired by the front and back side of the embroidered napkin.



Poetry & Performance. The Eastern European Perspective

Since the second half of the twentieth century, in particular poets and artists in Eastern Europe have taken up the challenge of reflecting on and investigating the instrumentalization of language for communicative and political-ideological purposes. They did so by drawing attention to the material and medial dimension of language, and by creating performative situations for themselves and their audiences within which possibilities of verbal expression could be tested and acted out. The exhibition presents authors from subcultures in socialist states along with contemporary positions. Now and then, poetry and performance take on an exceptional topicality in periods of political crisis, as these ephemeral and flexible art forms enable the reflection of relations and contexts that remain otherwise undiscussed.
