Odilon Redon (1840–1916) is one of the most astounding artists of the nascent years of modernism. The art of this leading representative of French Symbolism is determined by the interplay of tradition and innovation. In an outstanding selection of works, the exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler concentrates on Redon’s significance as a forerunner of classic Modernism and therefore on his art’s avant-garde dimension. Redon’s cryptic and enigmatic oeuvre is characterized by contrasts, and by a stylistic evolution that leads from the black of his early charcoal works and lithographs to the explosion of color that hallmarks his later pastels and oil paintings. His works oscillate between eerie strangeness and sunny cheerfulness, as dream meets nightmare and nature meets imagination.
