Matthias Dornfeld

Wir freuen uns, die dritte Einzelausstellung des Berliner Künstlers Matthias Dornfeld in der Galerie Ben Kaufmann zeigen zu können. Matthias Dornfelds Arbeiten beziehen ihre Unberechenbarkeit aus einem paradoxen Austarieren malerischer Fragen. Grundparameter bildnerischer Gestaltung werden zusammengeführt, überlagert oder zwischen Polaritäten eingespannt wie Fläche vs. Linie, Materialität vs. Bildlichkeit, Zeichnung vs. Malerei, amorphe Elemente vs. geometrische Grundformen, Ornament vs. bildliche Darstellung, Abstraktion vs. Gegenständlichkeit. Die klassischen Genres Portrait, Stillleben, Landschaftsmalerei werden mit neuen Arbeiten von Matthias Dornfeld durch das Historienbild ergänzt; als Konstellationen von Figuren, die Merkmale bildlicher Narrativität herausstellen. Das Aufgreifen von Klischees und Merkmalen eines klassischen Malereibegriffs reflektieren einen Prozess im Spannungsfeld von und jenseits expressiver Authentizität und distanzierter Brechung, der sich über die Fronten aktueller Malereidiskurse hinweg setzt.

We are pleased to present the third solo exhibition by the Berlin-based artist Matthias Dornfeld at Galerie Ben Kaufmann. Matthias Dornfeld’s works draw their incalculability from a paradoxical assessment of questions about painting. Basic parameter of pictorial creation are fused, superimposed or balanced between polarities such as plane vs. line, the material vs. the pictorial, drawing vs. painting, amorphous elements vs. basic geometric shapes, the ornamental vs. pictorial representation, abstraction vs. figuration. The new works of Matthias Dornfeld supplement the classical genres of portrait, still-life and landscape by adding history painting as a constellation of figures putting the focus on means of pictorial narration. In adapting the cliché and properties of a classical concept of painting Dornfeld’s work reflects a process within and beyond expressive authenticity and ironic alienation, thereby weaving through the crossfire of current discourses on painting.
