Reg Vardy Gallery is proud to partner with AV Festival 08 in commissioning Joyce Hinterding’s first solo exhibition in the UK. Hinterding, a renowned sound artist, will be showing her seminal work Aeriology.
Made from over twenty kilometres of copper wire that has been wrapped around the gallery’s architecture, Aeriology transforms the space into a beautiful walk-in radio antenna. Through sympathetic amplification the harmonising coils of this installation reveal otherwise unheard activity turning the ethereal into audio.
Aeriology was first installed to critical acclaim in 1995 at Artspace in Auckland, New Zealand. Since then it has toured internationally to Australia, Rotterdam, and Istanbul. Hinterding has described Aeriology as “a machine for a techne of the invisible.”
Joyce Hinterding was born in Melbourne Australia and has been working with sound for over twenty years. Much of her art is based in an understanding of the physicality of sound as it relates to the body and our architectural surroundings. Her work has recently been shown in a range of international venues including Perth Institute of Contemporary Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei; 26th Bienal de Sao Paulo; The Dutch Institute for Time based Art.
Aeriology’s Family Day will include an artist-lead activity for children between the ages of seven and fourteen. This event is free and parents are invited to accompany their children. Following this workshop Reg Vardy Gallery curator Robert Blackson will lead a discussion with the families about Joyce Hinterding’s exhibition. For more information about this event please call the gallery on 0191 515 2128.
