Johannes Vogl: The Story Cellar

Februar 2008, 19.00 Uhr Tom Morton, Redakteur bei Frieze, and Ko-kurator der Busan Biennale 2008, wird mit Johannes Vogl und den Kuratorinnen Adriana Marques und Eva Martischnig ein Diskussion zur Ausstellung am Mittwoch, dem 23. April 2008 um 19.00 Uhr, führen.

The Story Cellar ist eine ‚Spielwiese‘ von Ideen und Innovationen. In der Galerie im Keller des österreichischen Kulturforums präsentiert Johannes Vogl eine Reihe von Erfindungen, die keine Lösungen aufzeigen wollen, als vielmehr die Welt erforschen, und zwischen Funktionalität und fiktiven Applikationen oszillieren. Regen tropft dem einzigen Fenster entlang herunter, und nie wird ganz klar, ob diese ständige Täuschung, die Vogl in seiner Installation „Eine Woche Regen“ gebaut hat, irgendeinen anderen Zweck verfolgt als ein Gefühl von Melancholie zu erzeugen. Auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Raumes wird ein Film gezeigt, wo ein mit Marmelade beschmiertes Stück Brot sich ständig in slow motion dreht, so als würde es von einem Tisch hinunterfallen. Mit welcher Seite das Brot je am Boden landen wird, ist nur eine Frage der Wahrscheinlichkeit, die sich nie lösen wird. Dieser Keller voller Experimente, in dem sich eine Scheibe Brot auf ewig in der Luft hält und es ständig regnet - zeigt wie Johannes Vogl in seinen Arbeiten, alle noch so unbedeutenden Aspekte des täglichen Lebens untersucht, und ihnen Raum für spielerische Imaginationen gibt. Während seines Aufenthalts in London wird Vogl auch eine neue Performance Arbeit „30 Inch“ verwirklichen. Darin wird ein Mann auf dem einen Ende einer Kinder-Wippe in einem Londoner Park stehen, die am anderen Ende mit Sandsäcken beschwert ist. Wenn sich der Mann nun ‚erleichtert‘ - sprich uriniert - und sein Körpergewicht verringert, hebt er sich, während die andere Seite mit den Sandsäcken sinkt. Diese Arbeit, eine Mischung aus Verspieltheit und Provokation, illustriert die kalkulierende Naivität, die Vogl bewusst einsetzt.

Information über den Künstler:

Johannes Vogl, geboren 1981 in Kaufbeuren (Deutschland), lebt und arbeitet in Wien und Berlin. Er studiert derzeit an der Akademie für Bildende Künste in Wien und Berlin-Weissensee und hat unter anderem in der UTS Galerie, Sydney; Pudelcollection, Hamburg; Kunstverein Braunschweig ausgestellt und wird von der Galerie Martin Janda in Wien vertreten. The Story Cellar ist Vogls erste Ausstellung in Großbritannien.

Die Visual Arts Plattform präsentiert junge Künstlerlnnen aus Österreich und wird von Eva Martischnig und Adriana Marques kuratiert, die von Graz und London aus arbeiten. Über Ausstellungen, Aufenthalte und Präsentationen entsteht eine lebendige Verbindung zwischen dem Kulturgeschehen in Großbritannien und Österreich. Die Visual Arts Platform begann ihr Programm Anfang des Jahres 2006 mit Ausstellungen von Constantin Luser und Judith Fegerl, das 2007 mit Markus Wilfling, mahony, Fabian Seiz, Nikola Hansalik und Gregor Graf fortgesetzt wurde. Für das Programm 2008 sind weitere Ausstellungsprojekte von Almut Rink und Luisa Kasalicky geplant.

The Story Cellar is a playground of ideas and innovations. In the basement gallery of the Austrian Cultural Forum London, artist Johannes Vogl presents a series of inventions which don’t so much present solutions for the world, as explore it, oscillating between functionality and fictive applications. As rain trickles down the only window, it is never clear if this constant precipitation that Vogl has engineered in his installation “One Week of Rain” serves any other purpose other than to invoke a feeling of melancholy, while opposite, a film shows a slice of bread spread with jam on one side, perpetually rotating in slow motion, as if falling from a table. Whether the slice falls face up or face down is only of concern to probability. As the bread continues to spin, forever suspending fate, and rain continues to fall, defying all meteorological logic, this cellar of experimentation illustrates how Vogl’s practice carefully observes the most mundane aspects of the everyday, providing them with a space for playful imagination. During his residency in London, Vogl will also create a new performance work, “30 Inch”. Simply, a figure stands on a child’s see-saw in a London park, balanced with a sack of sand on the other side. As the figure begins to “relieve himself” and the body mass lessens, the figure rises. Mixing the light-hearted and the provocative, this work embodies the calculated naivety of Vogl’s work.

EVENT: Tom Morton, contributing editor of frieze magazine, and co-curator of the 2008 Busan Biennale, will be leading an artist’s talk with Vogl and the Visual Arts Platform curators Adriana Marques and Eva Martischnig on Wednesday 23 April 2008, at 7pm.

INFO: Johannes Vogl, born 1981 in Kaufbeuren (Germany), lives and works in Vienna and Berlin. He is currently studying at the Academies of Fine Arts, Vienna and Berlin-Weissensee and has exhibited widely with UTS Gallery, Sydney; Pudelcollection, Hamburg; Kunstverein Braunschweig, Brunswick a.o., and is represented by Galerie Martin Janda, Vienna. The Story Cellar is Vogl’s first solo exhibition in the UK.

The Visual Arts Platform is curated by Eva Martischnig and Adriana Marques, who are based in Graz (Austria) and London respectively, and presents emerging artists from or working in Austria. It aims to explore local, regional and global contexts of contemporary art by generating new links between Austria and the UK through exhibitions, residencies and artist's talks. The Visual Arts Platform is hosted by the Austrian Cultural Forum London which facilitates exchange between Austria and the UK in the arts, as well as various academic fields. The Visual Arts Platform began in 2006 with exhibitions by Constantin Luser and Judith Fegerl, and continued in 2007 with exhibitions by Markus Wilfling, mahony, Fabian Seiz, Nikola Hansalik and Gregor Graf. Forthcoming exhibitions include Almut Rink and Luisa Kasalicky in 2008.
