In their first Solo Show in Graz Helmut and Johanna Kandl are showing videos, photographies and paintings.

The title “Flying Picture” is referring to pictures and paintings, shown in public space in different connections, for instance as street painting or graffiti, but also to pictures and symbols in religious context, concretely to the CASA SANTA of Loreto.

The vido OPERETTA LORETO (Helmut & Johanna Kandl, ca. 14 min., 2008) thrown on a house shaped, slanted hanging screen, elaborates the documentary material taken in Loreto at Pentecost 2008 into a phantastic “flying” story. It shows different protagonists: the street painter Angelo, a sysiphus of painting, how he is constantly correcting his pictures, covering them in the evening and uncovering them in the morning - nurses, marching in like for a Cancan or like a military troop – beautifully coloured Fiat oldtimer sportscars being consecrated by Arch Bishop Giovanni - the votive donations of pilots and astronauts – and a swarm of bees turning the head of a Neptun figure on the central fountain into a swarming substance on the tick of high noon. For this video there are also some photographies to be seen.

The video COME ON, JOHANNA (Helmut & Johanna Kandl, ca. 8 min., 2008), a little picture on a screen, shows two tiny souvenir shops and their old owners waiting for customers, who look like sisters but do not communicate. It is the end of a day, both are locking their shops, for which the left woman needs eight minutes and the woman to the right one minute.

Some painted pictures (Johanna Kandl) show paintings in public space: for instance street painting in Loreto and a graffiti wall in Graz. The Graz motive is based upon a photography of the Forum Stadtpark, where graffiti artists are spraying – in comfort and legally ...

The graffiti look coloured, the painters themselves look like ‘ghosts’ painted in grisaille. The painting Hauptplatz in Loreto shows street painting “standing on the head”, integrated in the life on this place – people making photographies, cars, nurses. In a certain way the street painting in Loreto is also “on the head”: contrary to the imagination of the mobile, vagabonding street painter, the painter “Angelo” lives – according to his own words – nearby and every day he goes to the place like a civil servant to his office.

Other pictures, new and unusal ones (Johanna Kandl), show painting in other forms: between poured and dropped colour spots and areas there are small written phrases like GREAT PAINTING or WHY AM I SUCH A BAD OLD ARTIST or BORING OLD ARTIST.
