The exhibition project Excuse me, are you famous? takes its starting point from the consciousness that the art system - like each social structure - is characterized by hierarchies which determine in particular the relationship of curator and artist. Since the late 1990s, it became obvious that the curator is no longer someone who simply organises exhibitions and museum displays but is also able to manipulate taste, influence the career of artists and sometimes becomes a bigger star then the artist that he/she is exhibiting. The "super-curator" is born.

With an ironic undertone, Excuse me, are you famous? refers to this phenomenon and consists exclusively of portraits of the curator. All works were realised between 1990 and 2005.

By showing all portraits, Excuse me, are you famous? ironizes the phenomenon of the "self-promotion" of the curator with the help of an exhibition as an effective PR- and media strategy, in which the artist and the art work have a quasi illustrative function regarding the importance of the curator. Because all works are portraits, they function like mirror images. Besides, the exhibition enables an insight into the private sphere of the curator – an insight far beyond the usual constellations. While the publication of the private moment in artistic works and – accordingly – an autobiographical or psychoanalytical reading are widespread phenomena in contemporary art, the persona of the curator remains a dark horse. The curator usually speaks with the voice of the other – the artist. Although the portraits with their representative function are interpretations of the persona, they allow in many cases an insight into the relational network of the curator and various personal details.

Additionally, Excuse me, are you famous? is a site-specific project, because it was developed for an artist-run space – in this case Invaliden1. This is a fundamental precondition for the idea of the project, because hierarchies of the artsystem were inverted, since the curator was selected by the artists (and not vice versa, asi it is the usual way in exhibition projects). The participation of two members of Invaliden1, Sergio Belinchón and Santiago Ydáñez, adds another aspect to the powerplay between curator and artist.

Excuse me, are you famous? was developed for WL project | Berlin Hong Kong. Kathrin Becker is part of WL project | Berlin Hong Kong. It is a forum initiated by Shahram Entekhabi and active since the fall of 2008 aiming to catalyse the development of international curators, critics, artists, and audiences with a focus on the European and Asian regions. WL project | Berlin Hong Kong conceives and realises exhibition projects, discussions and a residency program. It does so in ist own space that will open in February, 2009, as well as by inivitation of cooperating institutions

On February 20, 2009 at 7 pm, and under the title "Structuring: Artist – Curator – Institution – Audience" there will be a talk between Rui Calçada Bastos (Invaliden1), Kathrin Becker (curator), Shahram Entekhabi (WL project | Berlin Hong Kong) and Alvaro Rodriguez Fominaya (Para/site, Hong Kong) (via Internet) that highlights the structures of the art system with a main focus on artists´ initiatives and artist-run spaces.

Das Ausstellungsprojekt Excuse me, are you famous? nimmt seinen Ausgangspunkt in dem Bewusstsein, dass der Kunstbetrieb – wie jede gesellschaftliche Struktur – von Hierarchien gekennzeichnet ist, die insbesondere auch das Verhältnis von Kurator/Kuratorin und Künstler/Künstlerin bestimmen. Seit den späten 1990er Jahren wurde deutlich, dass der Kurator jemand ist, der nicht einfach nur Ausstellungen und Museumspräsentationen organisiert, sondern auch in der Lage ist, Geschmack zu manipulieren, die Karriere von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern zu beeinflussen und mitunter ein größerer Star ist, als der Künstler, dien er ausstellt. Der "Super-Kurator" war geboren.

Excuse me, are you famous? nimmt mit ironischem Unterton Bezug auf dieses Phänomen und setzt sich ausschließlich aus Werken zusammen, die Porträts der Kuratorin der Ausstellung sind. Alle Arbeiten sind zwischen 1990 und 2005 entstanden.

Excuse me, are you famous? ironisiert damit das Phänomen der "Self-Promotion" des Kurators durch die Ausstellung als wirksamer PR- und Medien-Strategie, bei der Künstler und Werk sich quasi illustrativ zur Bedeutung des Kurators verhalten. Dadurch, dass alle Werke Porträts sind, tragen sie diese eine Spiegelbildfunktion in sich. Darüber hinaus ermöglicht die Ausstellung jedoch auch einen in den üblichen Konstellationen kaum möglichen Einblick in die private Sphäre der Kuratorin. Denn während die Veröffentlichung des Privaten im künstlerischen Werk und dementsprechend eine autobiografisch bis psychoanalytisch orientierte Rezeption in der zeitgenössischen Kunst vielfach anzutreffende Phänomene sind, bleibt die Person des Kurators weit gehend eine unbekannte Größe, da diese nur mit der Stimme von anderen – den Künstlerinnen und Künstlern – spricht. Zwar sind die Porträts mit ihrer Repräsentationsfunktion in erster Linie Interpretationen der Person, jedoch lassen sie vielfach Rückschlüsse auf das Beziehungssystem der Kuratorin und diverse persönliche Details zu.

Excuse me, are you famous? ist zudem ein ortsspezifisches Projekt, denn es wurde für einen so genannten artist-run space, also einem von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern betriebenen Ort – in diesem Fall Invaliden1 – entwickelt. Dies ist eine fundamentale Voraussetzung für das Selbstverständnis des Projekts, insofern hier die Hierarchien des Kunstbetriebs eine Inversion erfahren haben, indem die Kuratorin hier von den Künstlern von Invaliden1 (und nicht umgekehrt wie in regulären Ausstellungsprojekten) ausgewählt wurde. Die Beteiligung zweier Mitglieder von Invaliden1, Sergio Belinchón und Santiago Ydáñez, an der Ausstellung fügt dem Powerplay zwischen Kuratorin und Künsterinnen und Künstlern einen weiteren Akzent hinzu.

Excuse me, are you famous? wurde für WL project | Berlin Hong Kong entwickelt, deren Mitglied Kathrin Becker ist. WL project | Berlin Hong Kong ist ein von Shahram Entekhabi initiiertes, seit Herbst 2008 aktives Forum für die Entwicklung von internationalen Kuratorinnen und Kuratoren, Kritikerinnen und Kritikern, Künstlerinnen und Künstlern und Publikum mit Fokus auf den europäischen und asiatischen Raum. WL project | Berlin Hong Kong konzipiert und realisiert Ausstellungsprojekte, Diskussionen und ein Residency-Programm sowohl in seinen im Februar eröffnenden eigenen Räumen als auch auf Einladung von kooperierenden Institutionen.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung findet unter dem Titel "Structuring: Artist – Curator – Institution – Audience" am 20. Februar 2009 ab 19 Uhr ein Gespräch zwischen Rui Calçada Bastos (Invaliden1), Kathrin Becker (Kuratorin der Ausstellung), Shahram Entekhabi (WL project | Berlin Hong Kong) und Alvaro Rodriguez Fominaya (Para/site, Hong Kong) (via Internet) statt, das die Strukturen des Kunstbetriebs mit einem Fokus auf Künstlerinitiativen und artist-run spaces beleuchtet.
