Alexander Heim + Nicole Wermers

Alexander Heim und Nicole Wermers zeigen neue Arbeiten in der Arbeits- und Bibliothekswohnung der Kuratorin und Autorin Anna-Catharina Gebbers. Es ist ihre erste gemeinsame Ausstellung.

Die aus Video, Sound und einer Skulptur bestehende Installation ist einerseits ein Kommentar auf den spezifischen Ort und spielt zum anderen mit den Klischees des Paares in der heutigen Zeit. Der Titel “Iduna Nova” bezieht sich auf einen in den 1990er Jahren im deutschen Fernsehen weit verbreiteten Fernsehwerbespot einer Versicherungsgesellschaft. Ausgangspunkt der Ausstellung war die fragmentierte, gemeinsame Erinnerung an diese Werbung, die ein junges Paar am Strand zeigt, vielleicht auch einen Hund, die bei diesigem Wetter auf das Meer hinaus schauen, während “Les Trois Gymnopédies“ von Eric Satie sein massenmediales Debut als Soundtrack macht. (Es stellte sich dann später heraus, dass es sich bei der Versicherung um die „Baden Württembergische“ handelte, nicht wie zunächst angenommen um die „Iduna Nova“.)

Formal kühl und elegant werden Bezüge zu privaten Eindrücken und öffentlichen Räumen hergestellt. Die Ausstellung kommentiert die intime Atmosphäre einer leeren, aber mit einem Klavier ausgestatteten Wohnung, in der hinter einer verschlossenen Tür Bücherregale stehen und dekonstruiert gleichzeitig die manieriert pathetische Atmosphäre eines Werbeclips. Ein Klavierspieler wird “Les Trois Gymnopédies“ von Eric Satie während der vier Stunden andauernden Ausstellung vortragen und damit den Soundtrack für eine Videoarbeit von Alexander Heim und eine Skulptur von Nicole Wermers liefern.

Alexander Heim and Nicole Wermers, both living in London, will show new work in the workspace- and library apartment of the independent curator and writer Anna-Catharina Gebbers. It is their first exhibition together.

The exhibition including video, sound and a sculptural installation creates an atmosphere of site-specific comment and plays with clichés of the couple in modern times. The title “Iduna Nova“ refers to a television commercial of an insurance company widely shown in Germany during the nineties. The starting point of this exhibition is the fragmented, mutual memory of this TV ad. The commercial included a young couple on the beach, possibly a dog in misty weather, staring out onto the sea while “Les Trois Gymnopédies“ by Eric Satie made its mass-medial debut in the soundtrack. (As it turned out later the insurance company was actually called „Baden Württembergische“, not „Iduna Nova“ as initially thought, but the latter seemed to work better as a title).

Formally cool and elegant, involving both private views and references to public spaces, the exhibition will comment the intimate environment of an empty apartment with a piano in it, bookshelves behind a closed door and at the same time deconstruct the tear jerking atmosphere of a commercial. A piano player will perform “Les Trois Gymnopédies“ by Eric Satie during the four hours of the exhibition, providing the soundtrack to a video piece by Alexander Heim and a sculpture by Nicole Wermers.
