short biography

Robert Rauschenberg (b. 1925, Port Arthur/Texas; d. 2008, Captiva Island/Florida) was the pioneer of many art movements in the post-war period. His paintings, sculptures, photographs, material images and prints blended a variety of subjects, styles and techniques in a very particular way. Beginning in the mid-1950s, he developed "combines": paintings and objects were combined with abstract painting. In the early 1960s, he produced silkscreen prints based on media sources and his own photographs. Rauschenberg was committed to collaborating with artists, printers, engineers, writers, performers, and artisans from around the world. He studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute, Academie Julian in Paris, and Black Mountain College in North Carolina.
