Barnett Newman (born 1905 in Manhattan/New York, died 1970 in New York) is a representative of Abstract Expressionism, co-founder of Color Field Painting and member of the "New York School". In 1948 he established the school "Subject of the Artist" together with William Baziotes, Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko. 1959 and 1968 he participated at documenta 1 and 4 in Kassel.
