Susanne Bürner: Embodied Truth

„...In primitive cultures knowledge is often attained via corporeal rituals. The corporeal performing of rituals is a way of defining und understanding one’s place in the universe. Rituals are then active process of knowledge. Similary, filmmaking can be understood as a process of generating and embodying knowledge.“[1]

In ihrer neuen Videoarbeit „Embodied Truth“, beschäftigt sich die Künstlerin Susanne Bürner mit dem Sujet der Séancen, dem Medium, spirituell und artifiziell erzeugter Energie, sowie mit dem Mysterium per se. Ihr Video beobachtet eine Gruppe von Frauen während ihrer Vorbereitungen auf eine Séance, die bald darauf stattfindet. Im Laufe des Rituals sind ihre Körper besetzt von fremden Energien, die in Form von Ektoplasma aus diesen wieder austreten. Bürners Arbeit stellt nicht einfach solche Rituale nach, sondern befasst sich mit den Problemen von Dokumentation und Wahrnehmung. Die Dokumentation von Energien, die unsichtbar jedoch irgendwie erfahrbar sind, beruhen auf der allgemeinen Annahme, die Kamera hätte die Fähigkeit als Beweismittel zu dienen, die Wirklichkeit zu reproduzieren und schließlich sichtbar zu machen, was für das menschliche Auge nicht sichtbar war. Zugleich wurden Photographien in den 1920ern und 30ern tatsächlich genutzt um die Materialisierung von solchen Energien wissenschaftlich zu untersuchen. Gleiches trifft auf das Problem der Wahrnehmung zu. Als Zuschauer begleiten wir die Gruppe bei der Durchführung des Rituals, aber können wir auch daran teilnehmen, sind wir diesem spirituell zugetan oder schauen wir aus voyeuristischer oder wissenschaftlicher Position.

In her new video work „Embodied Truth“, the artist Susanne Bürner explores the theme of séances, the medium, spiritually and artificially created energy as well as the mystery itself. Her video revolves around a group of women preparing for a séance that is about to happen. In the course of the ritual, the women’s bodies are occupied by alien energies, that manifests in the form of ectoplasm. But the work does not simply re-enact such rituals. Moreover, it deals with problems of documentation and perception. The documentation of energies that are invisible but somehow sensed, relies on the common belief that the camera is capable of proving that an event actually happened, of reproducing reality and making visible what is not visible to the human eye. At the same time, photographs have actually been used in the 1920’s and 30’s to study the materialization of such energies. The same applies to the problem of perception. As a viewer we join the group during the ritual, but can we take part, are we spiritualy attached or do we watch from a voyeuristic or scientifc position.
